OUR VIEW: Tonight on 60 Minutes – nothing new

There are many things to which the old adage “Be careful what you wish for...” applies and American television coverage is usually one of them. But after the venerated television newsmagazine show 60 Minutes turned its cameras on the salmon farming industry on the coast of British Columbia and on the Campbell River area particularly, the conclusion has to be...okay.

The 60 Minutes segment on fish farming Sunday evening was like a heavyweight fight, with Ian Roberts of Marine Harvest pitted against anti open net pen activist Alexandra Morton. And like a title fight, viewers - at least from British Columbia - were expecting a winner. In the battle between the two main components, the match would be best described a draw.

British Columbia’s salmon farming industry was front and centre in millions of American homes Sunday night. CBS’ flagship newsmagazine 60 Minutes featured a 13-minute segment on the West Coast industry entitled Salmon in the Sea which investigated the issue of whether salmon farms help or hurt declining wild salmon stocks.
