Scientific breakthrough: International collaboration has sequenced the Atlantic salmon genome
Genome BC, June 10, 2014
Vancouver, BC - Today the International Cooperation to Sequence the Atlantic Salmon Genome (ICSASG) announced completion of a fully mapped and openly accessible salmon genome. This reference genome will provide crucial information to fish managers to improve the production and sustainability of aquaculture operations, and address challenges around conservation of wild stocks, preservation of at-risk fish populations and environmental sustainability. This breakthrough was announced at the International Conference on Integrative Salmonid Biology (ICISB) being held in Vancouver this week.

Salmon genome opens door to better farm fish, without genetic engineering
Vancouver Sun, June 12, 2014. Section: The Green Man, Posted by: Randy Shore
Understanding and targeting heritable traits in the genome will help speed breeding programs for Atlantic salmon aimed at improving resistance to viruses and sea lice, problems that have created considerable controversy for the aquaculture industry in B.C. Scientists have successfully mapped the whole genome sequence of the Atlantic salmon, a breakthrough that should accelerate selective breeding programs for farmed salmon and reduce the aquaculture industry’s impact on wild salmon stocks.

Cermaq supports Atlantic salmon genome sequencing project
2014-06-10: Cermaq Canada is proud to have been part of a research project which has sequenced the Atlantic salmon genome. Healthier food, more environmentally sound fish farming and better interactions with wild salmon are all positive outcomes from this research.

"New" virus has been in BC waters since at least the 1980s, says new DFO PRV fact sheet: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/science/species-especes/aq-health-sante/prv-rp-eng.html … #salmon #aquaculture

Here is the DFO Reference Link:  Piscine Reo-virus (PRV)
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has received a number of inquiries regarding the presence of Piscine Reo-virus (PRV) on the Pacific Coast...The following summarizes DFO’s current scientific understanding related to PRV and Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation (HSMI). This information, as well as new and emerging science, will continue to inform our approach to the management of both wild fisheries and aquaculture in BC.

Yes, the CFIA CAN detect ISA virus HPR0
Salmon Farm Science, June 10, 2014
One of the favourite claims in Alexandra Morton and friends’ narrative about the ISA virus in farmed salmon is that the CFIA can’t detect it.
Another one of their favourite claims is that the strain of ISA virus that doesn’t cause disease, HPR0, is elusive and hard to detect and so therefore it must be in the Pacific somewhere. Neither are true.

The results are in: Tyee headline writers still crazy…
Salmon Facts are Sacred, June 10, 2014
Our title would have been a much more accurate than the recent headline that the online rag called Tyee ran with. The story’s actual title, “Tyee readers still crazy for Alexandra Morton, who tops Order of BC poll”, seemed to leave a reader with the perception that this was high ranking stuff. It isn’t.
