Vancouver guide gets it wrong...twice
Canada: When it comes to salmon farms and sea lice, everybody seems to claim expertise, but the latest criticism lacks credibility on two counts.
Odd Grydeland, FishfarmingXpert, Sept. 3, 2014
The latest finger-pointing about sea lice came from a Vancouver-based sport fishing charter operator. According to an article posted last week by Hayley Cooper, on the radio station NEWS1130:...The above quote caught the eye of Ian Roberts who works for the largest salmon farming company in BC. In an e-mail to the Aquatic Venture sport fishing charter company, he points out to Mr Hedert that the numbers of sea lice that he reports are actually lower than those found on sockeye salmon in areas far away from salmon farms. Fifth fisheries opening for sockeye catch
Graeme Wood / Richmond News, September 3, 2014
Commercial gillnet fishers were back on the Fraser River Tuesday, working a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift, catching as many sockeye salmon as they can fit on their boats. It was the fifth opening of the year for fishers. The fourth opening occurred last week. A sixth opening will happen on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. So far, as of Monday, an estimated 5.3 million fish have passed by Mission. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is now estimating a sockeye summer run of 8 million fish but has yet to offer up an estimate of the late summer run, which is expected to be the biggest. “Extremely high fractions of Fraser sockeye continue to emigrating via the Johnstone Strait route,”

...“We’re alarmed at what we’re seeing,” he said in an interview Friday. “These are significant wounds that must adversely influence the sockeye’s probability to survive.” Lamprey are also being observed in the Strait of Georgia, including commission test fisheries. “They’ve pulled in sockeye with lampreys still attached,” confirmed Mike Lapointe, the commission’s chief biologist. “There’s obviously a body of them out there, and they’re taking advantage of this big group of fish.”

'Fishing the hell’ out of B.C. sockeye may be best way to preserve stocks, UBC professor says
Brian Hutchinson | September 4, 2014
VANCOUVER — The return of the sockeye to B.C.’s Fraser River this time of year can sometimes mean money for fishermen and their families. It always means disagreement over how many fish should be taken for human consumption — even in years of extraordinary abundance, such as this one.
